It's probably easier than you think, but it takes some time to really work out what's wrong with your current woodland photography techniques.

Woodland Photography is one of the most challenging genres to master. Photographing a messy nature scene so that the viewer can be entirely focused on what you wanted them to look at can be very tricky. But it dosen't have to be. The trick is to train yourself to look at things differently, to adapt and stop looking at the wood and instead look for the trees.

This may sound pithy, but it's the best tip I could give you.

When we look at a woodland scene, and I mean stand in the woodland and look, our brains quickly determine the location. We can quickly focus on individual elements and take in the entire scene in nano-seconds. Our eyes focus instantly on what we want them to imperceptibly. The de-focus other things and we don't notice it's happened in the 3D world. A intrinsically messy scene can look glorious and we raise the camera, take the shot and review it later to be incredibly disappointed by the result. We have made a 2D facsimile of a 3D scene with all its chaos and its looks like chaos. The eye doesn't know where to look, there's branches everywhere and it just looks like a mess. You might as well have taken a shot of a landfill site.
