Heat mitigation in the Southwest: natural and engineered solutions by Ariane Middel, Associate Professor, School of Arts Media and Engineering and Ankit Joshi, Associate Professor, School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy

With its hot and dry climate, Phoenix is a living laboratory where cooling strategies can be deployed and tested in real-world neighborhoods. This presentation provides an overview of recent field studies in the Valley that tested heat mitigation strategies, from synthetic turf to shade and cool pavement. We will learn about MaRTy, a biometeorological instrument platform that can sense how heat is “experienced” by a pedestrian. After the presentation and Q&A, Dr. Ankit Joshi will introduce the workgroup to ANDI, ASU’s new thermal sweating manikin.
