Описание к видео What is Cosmic Redshift?

Cosmic redshift is a phenomenon observed in astronomy where light from distant galaxies and celestial objects appears to be shifted toward the longer-wavelength, or "redder," end of the electromagnetic spectrum. This effect is a consequence of the expansion of the universe and is a fundamental piece of evidence supporting the Big Bang theory.

As the universe expands, the space between galaxies also stretches, causing the wavelengths of light emitted by those galaxies to stretch as well. This stretching of light is known as the Doppler shift, and it causes the light to shift toward the red end of the spectrum. The greater the distance to an object, the more pronounced the redshift.

The cosmic redshift is quantified using a parameter known as "redshift z." It's calculated by measuring the observed wavelength of light from an object and comparing it to the wavelength that would be measured if the object were stationary relative to the observer. The formula for redshift (z) is z = Δλ / λ, where Δλ is the change in wavelength and λ is the rest wavelength.

Cosmic redshift has several important implications:

Expansion of the Universe: Redshift provides direct evidence that the universe is expanding. Edwin Hubble's observations of redshift in galaxies led to the formulation of Hubble's law, which describes the relationship between the redshift of galaxies and their distance from us.

Big Bang Theory: Cosmic redshift is a key piece of evidence for the Big Bang theory, suggesting that the universe originated from an extremely dense and hot state.

Cosmological Distance Measurement: Redshift is used to estimate the distance to galaxies and other celestial objects. By measuring the redshift, astronomers can determine how far away an object is and how fast it's receding.

Cosmic redshift is a fundamental concept in observational cosmology, revealing the dynamic and expanding nature of the universe and allowing astronomers to piece together its history and evolution.
