Quick Facts:

The word “picaresque” is taken from a form of satirical prose originating in Spain, depicting realistically and often humorously the adventures of a low-born, roguish hero living by his or her wits in a corrupt society.

All songs written by Colin Meloy.

1. The Infanta - In Spain and Portugal the infanta is the daughter of the reigning monarch who is not next in line to the throne.

2. We Both Go Down Together - Narrated by a man from the British upper class who is in a relationship with a poor peasant girl (Miranda), possibly forcing himself on her. The song then describes the details their ruinous, and ultimately deadly, relationship.,

3. Eli, the Barrow Boy - A ghost story about Eli the Barrow Boy, who probably committed suicide by drowning himself after he lost his beloved – likely to some disease.

4. The Sporting Life – He fails in sports and his gf, dad, and coach are all disappointed.

5. The Bagman's Gambit - Tells the story of a government worker who falls for a spy, and the lengths they are willing to go for them.

6. From My Own True Love (Lost at Sea) – Start of song tells us she has been waiting 80 years asking the postman if he has a letter from her own true love lost at sea.

7. Sixteen Military Wives - Meloy has characterized the song as a "protest song" inspired by the Iraq War. However, though it does attack elements of American foreign policy under George W. Bush..The first verse deals with the pointless deaths of the wars, the second with the self-congratulatory nature of celebrity and academic culture, and the third with the overall corruption of the country.

8. The Engine Driver - Meloy picked this as one of The Decemberists' best songs in an interview, saying: It was a very quick write. It came out fully formed. I remember [Decemberists guitar player] Chris Funk was going through a breakup at the time and playing it for the band in practice. It just seemed to hit the right notes, the sort of sad sentiment of it all.

9. On the Bus Mall - Chronicles the experiences of 2 male prostitutes eking out a living in Portland.

10. The Mariner's Revenge Song - Song in the form of a nautical ballad. The story begins as the narrator, 1 of 2 survivors stranded in the belly of a whale, explains to his companion how their lives were interwoven.

11. Of Angels and Angles - The song is unique on the album in that it features only vocalist Colin Meloy with acoustic guitar accompaniment.
