Normally in an early pregnancy when scan is done normally it will be a thick endometrial reaction. But a thin endometrial reaction and specially in individuals with polycystic ovarian syndrome indicates a probable progesterone deficiency which is described as luteal phase defect. This can also reveal an absent corpus luteum or a small corpus luteum which will also help in diagnosing a luteal phase defect. Sometimes the luteal phase defect in individuals with mild to moderate PCOS could also be due to thyroid disorder or an elevated prolactin level also. So these conditions have to be diagnosed and treated under good progesterone support might help to overcome the risk of abortions in these individuals and adequate bed rest is also indicated for certain period of time to prevent the risk of abortion.
