During his address in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi quipped at the Gandhis, asking why they didn’t use Nehru as their last name despite being the descendants of India’s first prime minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru. “I had read in newspapers that at least 600 schemes were named after Gandhi-Nehru. I fail to comprehend why his (Jawahar Lal Nehru) descendants fear using his last name. If he was such a renowned person, then what’s the shame?” asked PM Modi while replying to the Motion of Thanks to the President's address to the joint session of Parliament ahead of the Union Budget. Jawahar Lal Nehru is the great-grandfather of the Congress MP and former president of the party, Rahul Gandhi. The prime minister continued his address amid continuous sloganeering against the backdrop of the free fall of Adani Group’s stocks triggered by an American short-seller company, Hindenburg Research's report. Amid the unrelenting opposition chants and ruckus by Opposition MPs, PM Modi quoted a Hindi couplet. "Keechad unke pass tha, mere pass gulal. Jo jis ke pass tha, usne diya uchal," PM Modi quoted Manik Verma's poem in response to the allegations opposition parties levelled on him and his government.
