Albert Centre Market & Food Centre : cheap & good food in the Bugis-Rochor area

Albert Centre Market & Food Centre is at 270 Queen Street but it obviously takes its name from Albert Street, which was named in the 1800s in honour of Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria of England. There is nothing regal about Albert Centre today but Albert Food Centre is a great place in the city to eat like a true blue Singaporean.

If you are thinking about where to eat in the Bugis-Rochor area, Albert Centre Market & Food Centre is one of the best places for cheap and good food. Albert Centre is located somewhere between Bugis Junction and Sim Lim Square. It is along the pedestrian-only stretch of Waterloo Street, also known as 四马路 (Si Ma Lu) in Chinese. The area epitomizes multi-religious Singapore – with Sri Krishnan Temple and Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple almost next to each other and several Christian churches nearby.

Albert Centre Market & Food Centre attracts both the worshipers and shoppers. There are long lines at many of the stalls during meal times.

百年酿豆腐 Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu

Judging solely by the length of the queue, Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu (or Century Yong Tau Foo) must be on of the most popular stalls in Albert Centre Market & Food Centre.

Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu sells yong tau foo with a light savoury soup. This is a yong tau foo stall where you do not pick your own items. Each bowl comes with a standard selection of items. The only choice you really have is whether you want bittergourd. A standard bowl is $5.90.

The ingredients in each bowl include minced pork ball, minced prawn ball, minced pork & prawn ball, fish and beancurd. They are all handmade. Your bowl of yong tau foo will be prepared before your eyes only after you have placed your order. The freshly cooked piping hot bowl of Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu we tried was delicious – worth queuing up for.

Angel Horse Teochew Fish Soup

This very popular stall sells bowls of fish soup with lots of ingredients and a generous portion of sliced fish. The broth is rich and flavourful.

Siraj Famous Waterloo St Indian Rojak

Waterloo Street is associated with Indian Rojak. Siraj Famous Waterloo St Indian Rojak’s version is as authentic as it gets. It is a heritage stall and the food is good too.

Traditional Wanton Noodle

The wanton mee starts at just $3.50 and you get a generous portion of noodles. The char siew was average but the chilli was really good – not too spicy but had a nice kick.

Tong Cheng Yuan Soya Bean is another stall in Albert Food Centre where you will see many people standing patiently in line. Tong Cheng Yuan Soya Bean sells bean curd and grass jelly with an assortment of tempting toppings like sea coconut, tapioca pearls, lychee and attap seeds.
