Aloha Nō Aunty Hoku

This past week has been an emotional one to say the least. The world has lost a beautiful and loving kumu hula, my very first Kumu Hula, Aunty Hokulani DeRego. My love of hula started when my mom enrolled me in hula lessons at Halau Hula O Hokulani when I was 6 years old. I will cherish all the memories made over the years like the countless hula camps, Na Pua Kukui at Hilton Hawaiian Village, sleep overs at her home so me, Kehau and other hula sisters could have fun, training for solo competitions, halauʻs first Merrie Monarch, Halauʻs and my first trip to Japan, and all those encouraging and hilarious talks instead of practicing hula. Iʻve been reading a letter from Aunty Hoku over again and again, teary eyed, just to hold on to her words, her voice, and the memories. Iʻm so glad that I got to spend the day with Aunty Hoku, Uncle Larry and hula sister Judy last month to reminisce, laugh, and share with them how grateful I am for everything. Iʻm tremendously blessed and thankful for Aunty Hoku and Uncle Larry, and for the many opportunities, life lessons, and their unconditional love and support throughout the years. I love you Aunty Hoku & Uncle Larry!!! Eō Halau Hula O Hokulani!!! Nani, Kehau, & Leo, Love you sisters! ‪#‎RockinRedLipsAndHulaHips‬
