"Smart Targets pop up because they’re a really helpful way of setting action points or goals that have a better chance of succeeding and are great refining your to-do list by introducing parameters for your actions

Let’s look at a simple to-do list, it might look something like, football practice at 5pm, grocery shopping, call mum, reading.

The last action reading is very, very undefined. What are you reading? Why are you reading it? What do you need to do with your reading afterwards?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or are struggling with executive function having to make all these separate, but linked decisions before you start something might mean that you never start at all.
This is where smart targets can come in.

Smart targets or goals are Specific. You need to define what it is you are doing. Reading for example could mean read the first chapter of the book on your reading list.

They need to be measurable. You need to know when you’ve done them. For the reading one that’s going to be pretty obvious because you’ll have finished the chapter.

They need to be Achievable. Do you have all the knowledge resources you need to do this target? For example, do you have the book that you need to read?

They need to be Realistic. You’ve got to be ABLE to do it in the time you’ve got available. If you’ve only got 3 hours and you need to read a whole book that’s not a realistic target.

And they need to be Time-bound. You need to set a deadline for when you’ll do the action.

So reading as a smart target might look something like read the first article on the reading list and take notes by 2pm on Friday.

Setting unachievable or unrealistic goals is a common reason why people don’t do the things on their to-do list.

So it’s worth thinking about those two sections of the smart targets in some detail before you get started.

If you’re finding a lot of your goals depend on knowledge you don’t have, for example, it might be worth doing a little bit of background reading around something you need to do before you do the main action on your to-do list.
