Celebrating 40 years of Business Improvement Areas in Calgary with Mainstreet Bowness

I grew up in an entrepreneurial family, owned a small business and spent much of my career making it easier and faster for local businesses to set up in our city. Supporting small businesses isn’t just professional for me – it’s personal.

This year marks 40 years since Calgary’s first Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) were established, and from October 8–14, we’re recognizing BIA Week.

I had the chance to sit down with the Director of Mainstreet Bowness BIA, Jacqui Esler, to reflect on nearly 30 years of supporting the businesses that make Bowness feel like home. From community events to mural projects, the BIA has been a driving force behind keeping our neighbourhood vibrant. Let’s continue to show our support for local businesses and the people behind them.
