It’s time to spend a half day exploring Juneau. We had an excursion for a helicopter glacier walk, but due to the cloudy weather it was cancelled. We were able to book a last minute tour through M&M Tours at their stand on the pier. This cost approximately $70 each. We toured several highlights including Homestead and Overstreet park. Then it was time to explore the Mendenhall Glacier. We decided to take a hike down to Nugget Falls, it is an easy hike, 2 miles total, out and back. We headed back to the ship and spent the day hanging out and enjoying the views. That night we decided to have a date night at the French specialty restaurant, Le Bistro. We had 2 free specialty meals included in our fare. This meal blew our minds! It was exceptional and we would highly recommend everyone give it a try.
The next day was another short port day in Ketchikan. Norwegian ships dock 7 miles outside of the city at Ward Cove, and offer free shuttles to/from the downtown area. Unfortunately, the times are limited and end very early, in our opinion. Port time was 7 am - 12:30. , but the last shuttle to Ketchikan was at 9:00 am and the last shuttle to Ward Cove was 11:00. We decided to check out the popular area of Creek Street, which consists of buildings built upon stilts along the Ketchikan Creek. There are lots of shops in the area and very cool to check out. We walked around as we headed back to the shuttle, stopping by a local coffee shop. After grabbing some souvenirs, we boarded the ship and enjoyed spending some time enjoying the views. Later on, we went for nightly pub trivia and we won! We got some cool prizes: toiletry bag, cards and bottle opener keychain. Afterwards, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the main dining room before heading back to Henry’s Pub for a night of music by our favorite musician on the boat: Drake Allen.
Our last day started off late due to losing an hour as we headed back towards Seattle. Our cruise port tonight was to Victoria, British Columbia in Canada from 8 pm - 11:30 pm. We spent the day hanging out and checking out the activities that the cruise had going on such as trivia, music and, as always, enjoying the views and playing cards. We decided to stay on the ship tonight and relax. We enjoyed our last dinner at the main dining room and it was fantastic as always. The food on Norwegian really is quite delicious and offers a good amount of variety in their menu. After dinner, it was time to pack and leave our luggage out from them to take the bags off the ship. It was a wonderfully fun cruise and we really enjoyed ourselves and the beauty of Alaska, the last frontier. We hope your enjoyed coming along with us. Hi! We’re Chris and Tracy and we love to #travel. Unfortunately, we both have full time jobs working in healthcare which require us to have a home base, instead of the digital nomad life that we envy. However, this lifestyle has allowed us to learn the ins and outs of planning #vacations. When we first met, we were very young and enjoyed some domestic travel. When we got married, we decided to go onto our first #international trip together. Let’s just say, Tracy caught a bad case of the travel bug. So it was our mission to go everywhere!
We try to plan 3-4 “big” trips a year. In total, we have been to 64 countries together (Chris is at 75 total himself). The biggest thing that we have taken away from this is how to be savvy while traveling. At first, we took a lot of cruises because they were easy. However, we met some new friends on a cruise who told us to come visit them in Malaysia and that was our first trip that we planned all on our own. Let’s say it was a great trip but we made a few mistakes, like severely overpaying for our taxi in Bali. However, we have used everything as a learning experience. We really love the logistics of planning trips and getting the best deals and experiences. And it would be selfish to keep this knowledge to ourselves!
We have lots of friends and family come to us for advice or helping planning. So why not expand our audience and help everyone out! Our motto in life is champagne taste on a beer budget, or more correctly, a 5 star hotel taste for a hostel price.
