Components of food are the substances that are present in the food we eat. They provide us with energy, growth, and health. There are six main components of food: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibres. Here are some important points about each component:
Carbohydrates are energy-giving food. They are mainly found in grains, fruits, vegetables, and sugar. They can be tested by iodine solution, which turns blue-black in the presence of starch.
Fats are also energy-giving food, but they provide more energy than carbohydrates. They are found in oils, butter, ghee, cheese, and meat. They can be tested by paper test, which leaves an oily spot on paper.
Proteins are body-building food. They help in the growth and repair of our body tissues. They are found in milk, eggs, meat, cheese, pulses, and beans. They can be tested by copper sulphate and caustic soda solutions, which turn purple in the presence of protein.
Vitamins are protective food. They help in keeping our eyes, bones, teeth, and gums healthy. They also protect us from diseases and infections. They are found in fruits, vegetables, milk, and eggs. There are different types of vitamins, such as vitamin A, B, C, D, E, and K.
Minerals are also protective food. They help in the proper functioning of our body systems, such as blood circulation, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and hormone secretion. They are found in salt, milk, eggs, meat, fruits, and vegetables. Some important minerals are calcium, iron, iodine, phosphorus, and potassium.
Dietary fibres or roughage are not nutrients, but they are essential for our digestion. They add bulk to the food and help in the easy movement of food along the digestive tract. They also prevent constipation and other digestive disorders. They are found in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
A balanced diet is a diet that contains all the components of food in the right proportion and quantity. It ensures that our body gets all the nutrients it needs for proper growth and health. A balanced diet varies according to the age, gender, activity level, and health condition of a person.
