When a retired colonel opened his personal library to young factory workers in Pittsburgh, a 13-year-old immigrant named Andrew Carnegie discovered something that would change his life: books. He called them “the precious treasures of knowledge and imagination.”

After making a fortune in steel, Carnegie went on to fund the construction of more than 2,500 free public libraries, nearly 1,700 in the United States, believing they were “ladders upon which the aspiring may climb.”
