Описание к видео How to deal with Old Testament quotes in the New Testament

Why did the authors of the New Testament quote the Old Testament? Better yet, what are we missing by not looking up those Old Testament verses referenced in the New Testament? In this video we discuss a very important Bible study tip that can be a game-changer for you.

We might actually be missing a lot because oftentimes the New Testament writers only quoted small pieces of Old Testament verses. They assumed their audience would have the Old Testament memorized! I don't know about you, but most of us don't have the Old Testament memorized. They used to learn many of the Old Testament books and stories in school and often committed entire passages to memory! That becomes a problem for the modern reader because the New Testament writers expected readers to know exactly what they were talking about. Unfortunately we have to do a little extra work to understand what the New Testament writers were trying to say.

The writers often left out the most important parts of the passages they were referencing. Looking up those Old Testament verses referenced and reading the full passage can help us understand what the writer was actually trying to say. Check out the example from this video. In Mark 1:3, Mark quoted Isaiah 40:3 but he didn't quote the whole verse. He likely only quoted part of Isaiah 40:3 because Jews would know the rest of the quote. We don't though, so let's compare:

Mark 1:3 (ESV) says "the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight,’”

Compare to:

Isaiah 40:3: "A voice cries:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
make straight in the desert a highway for our God."

Notice that when Mark quoted Isaiah 40:3, he said "make his paths straight" instead of "make straight in the desert a highway for our God." If you read the full quote from Isaiah, you'll realize that Mark is applying this passage about God from Isaiah to Jesus. This verse from Isaiah was carefully chosen by Mark and used to Introduce Jesus to the reader. Why? In Isaiah 40:3, the traveler is God, but in Mark 1:3, the traveler he refers to is Jesus. Mark seems to be using Isaiah 40:3 to say that Jesus is God traveling through our world, but without looking up the original quote from Isaiah, this can be missed. It only becomes clear when looking up the full verse and applying its original meaning to Mark 1:3. Hopefully you can see how looking up Old Testament quotes used by New Testament writers can help deepen your understanding of the Bible and bring clarity to possible interpretations.
