Goa almost beat rabies. Here’s how.

Back in 2014, Goa was facing a rabies crisis, 17 people died that year and nearly 9 in 10 suspected animal cases tested positive.

Then came Mission Rabies, a UK-based NGO. In a record-breaking campaign, 500 vets from 16 countries vaccinated over 63,000 dogs in just 30 days.

By 2015, the Goa government joined in. They set up a 24/7 rabies hotline, rapid response teams, and launched state-wide vaccination and sterilisation drives.

The results? Since 2017, human rabies deaths have nearly disappeared. Goa even earned a “rabies-controlled” tag in 2021. One case was reported in 2023, but none since.

The fight isn’t over. Dogs crossing in from Maharashtra and Karnataka still pose risks. That’s why Goa now mandates pet owners to declare vaccination records when entering the state.

The lesson? Rabies can be defeated with science, scale, and persistence, not by removing dogs from streets, but by vaccinating them.
