Most Indian restaurants overseas tend to play safe, offering conventional, expected fare - generic butter chickens, kebabs, rotties, kurmas et al. There are a few however that are bold enough to showcase a menu that truly represents the rich culinary heritage of our country. One such restaurant is Jhol by Chef Hari Nayak, a Coastal Indian restaurant that celebrates dishes from Gujarat, Konkan, Karwar, Mangalore, Kerala on the West Coast to Chennai, Orissa and Bengal on the East.
We spent a leisurely afternoon here savouring their tasting menu - avocado Bombay bhel, Parsee patra ni machi, Calicut pepper crab, Iyengar masala maska bun, Kolkata devilled egg, Kundapura ghee roast, banana blossom poriyal, Kodava pandi curry, cauliflower bezule, Alleppey fish curry, inji puli ribs, ghongura mamsam, Odia dahi vada aloo dum, Behrampur fried chicken, elaneer payasam, Mysore pak and more - rooted in ingredients to bring the taste of India but in delightful interpretations to suit the global palate. If you’re looking for a special dining experience when in Bangkok, this would certainly be it. And yes, they do have a Michelin star as well!
