Hypertension in pregnancy becomes a high-risk pregnancy. It depends on whether you have chronic hypertension. Chronic hypertension means you have high blood pressure before you become pregnant, or you have pregnancy-induced hypertension, also called preeclampsia. Pregnancy-induced hypertension develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy. What are the symptoms that trigger you to go to the hospital? If you have a headache, if you have blurring of vision, if you have pain in the epigastric region or abdominal pain, if you have decreased fetal movement, if you have swelling in your hands or legs or the entire body, your face is swollen. These are the signs you have to immediately go to the hospital. If your BP is high, we will advise you on antihypertensive treatment, either oral medication. If you're at term around 36 weeks and your BP is very high, above 160/110, and you have all these symptoms, then we may advise termination of the pregnancy. So, depending on your signs, symptoms and your blood pressure recordings, your sonography report, the baby's growth, and the baby's condition at that time, we will decide the treatment for the pregnancy. Usually, antihypertensive medicines are safe in pregnancy. If you are diagnosed with high BP after 20 weeks or even before planning for the pregnancy, we will continue the same medicine. We may add some other medicine to control your high blood pressure. But any of these warning signs, don't ignore. Immediately go to the hospital and consult the doctor.
