Israel is witnessing a sharp rise in mental health crises among its soldiers as the war triggered by the October 7 Hamas attack drags on.

Official data from Israel’s Defence Ministry shows a nearly 40 percent increase in post-traumatic stress disorder cases since September 2023. The ministry has warned that the number could rise further in the coming years due to prolonged combat exposure.

A parliamentary committee has flagged a deeply worrying trend, revealing that hundreds of soldiers attempted suicide between early 2024 and mid-2025. Combat troops and reservists deployed in extended operations account for the majority of these cases.

Mental health experts say soldiers are struggling not only with trauma from violence but also with “moral injury” — the psychological distress linked to causing harm in high-pressure combat situations.

Despite the growing crisis, accessing state support remains difficult. Lengthy assessment procedures and bureaucratic hurdles often discourage soldiers from seeking timely help.

Therapists and aid groups warn that as the war continues, the psychological toll on Israeli troops — and civilians across the region — is deepening, pointing to a long-term mental health emergency alongside the ongoing conflict
