The right to take part in free and fair elections is one of the basic tenets of democracy. Scholars and citizens’ concern over the integrity of elections in the United States, as issues with mail-in ballots, voter ID laws, and the appropriate function of social media platforms have become central political battlegrounds. Furthermore, as election infrastructure has become computerized and campaigns have become more active in the digital space, technological threats to election security have emerged. These include online disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks targeting election machines. At stake is the integrity of election process, and, ultimately, core democratic principles.

In this webinar, held on September 24, 2020, our panel of experts considered these issues, as well as broader questions, such as: In what ways do these threats to election integrity impede the proper functioning of a democracy? What steps can be taken to protect election equipment? What is the role of policy in regulating social media companies, strengthening the security of election infrastructure, and otherwise strengthening the electoral process?
