Wild punches and haymakers are often easier to defend against if your opponent is shorter than you, because you don't need to worry about bridging that gap. You don't need to worry about your timing because you have a longer reach than your opponent if he's smaller than you or the same size as you.

However, if you're against a bigger opponent, it will be much more difficult to bridge the gap and move in, since your opponent has a longer reach than you and can use that to his advantage to strike you with a lot of power.

The purpose of this self defense drill is to defend and fight back with impact. You can't learn how to fight, unless at some point you practice fighting! You need to put on those gloves and mouthpiece, and go for it! It's the only way to learn.

When you strike, your aim shouldn't always be to go through the target, it should also be to commit and hit towards your target. Also, it's best if you aim to strike first. This puts you to an advantage. You should hit your opponent first with a strong strike, and then go in. Hitting first is a great tactic if no other option of defusing the fight is possible.

If your opponent manages to strike first and begins to go through wild punches at you, you need to block as best as you can and strike back using palm strikes, elbows, knees and other devastating blows.
