What a night at Municipal Stadium in San Jose. The home of the minor league Giants got a colossal effort from San Benito and St. Francis in the CCS Open Division Championship. The biggest difference between the two teams: one had UCLA-bound senior Jeremy Ydens, and the other didn't. Ydens dominated on the mound for the Lancers, pitching a complete game shutout and giving up just 6 hits while striking out 7 batters. St. Francis also got a timely hit-by-pitch when Mack Cheli stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 5th inning. That would prove to be the only run of the game despite the Haybalers getting a runner in scoring position in the 4th, 6th, and 7th innings. Ydens worked his way out of every jam and struck out the final batter, to give the Lancers a 1-0 victory and back-to-back CCS titles. After the game, St. Francis skipper Mike Oakland said, "He's the best player I've ever coached," and Ydens sure played like it in the last game of his high school career.
