So I already proved that it's possible to hijack the remote from a cheap toy car and inject the inputs from a PS5 controller into the car's remote. But who needs the separate translator unit anyway? In this video, I remove the original toy car's receiver unit and replace it with an ESP32 microcontroller, motor driver, and a steering servo, and I even manage to fit in addressable RGB LEDs and a speaker for horn sound effects.

I almost certainly didn't implement the controls very well compared to the standard set by popular racing games, so if you have better suggestions, please send them my way via the comments!

Interesting note: The car horn sound effect is not generated by playing back a pre-recorded sound file. I just couldn't find any ones that sounded good -- so I made a quick programmatically generated horn. It is just two squarewaves tuned to E4 and G4, and modulated using an ADSR function. Big thanks to an old Technology Connections video for teaching me that the tones of two-tone horns like the one I created are typically tuned a minor third apart:    • Klaxons; What makes them sound like that?
