This commentary looks at a set of promos that ran on The Disney Channel in 2010.

Commentary
"In this video we watched a set of promos that ran on Disney Channel in 2010. Included was a Disney Channel ID and promos for Sonny with a Chance, Good Boy, Handy Manny Big Race and Phineas and Ferb: Secret Agent Showdown Marathon. We also saw the opening for the Disney Channel Movie.

In this video we can see some of the shows that were big on the Disney Channel in 2010 and how Disney promoted them. One of those shows was Sonny with a Chance. Sonny with a Chance was a teen sitcom that aired on Disney Channel for two seasons from February 2009 through January 2011. The series centered on Sonny Munroe, played by Demi Lovato, who was a comedian from Wisconsin who joins the cast of a sketch comedy TV series titled So Random! after moving to Hollywood.

The show was a big success with an average of over 4 million viewers per episode for season 1 and 6 million viewers per episode during season 2. It was initially renewed for a third season, but that season had to be restructured after Demi Lovato withdrew to deal with personal struggles. For a time Disney Channel aired new episodes without Lovato, focussing on the fictional sketch comedy show in the show that was called So Random! But after Lovato declined to come back to the series, those episodes were renamed and repackaged to become the first season of So Random! After that Sonny with a Chance officially only had two seasons. Sonny with a Chance is currently available on Disney Plus.

Next we saw a promo for the movie Good Boy which may look a lot like a Disney movie, but actually its a movie from MGM. This shows that in 2010 the channel was still running what is called acquired content, which is content purchased from outside sources. The film Good Boy is a 2003 science-fiction family film from MGM based on the book Dogs from Outer Space. While it may look like a TV movie, it was actually released in theaters and id very well delivering a box office of 45 million dollars against a budget of 18 million dollars.

We also saw a promo for Handy Manny Big Race. Handy Manny was an animated children's TV series that ran on Disney Channel's Playhouse Disney block from 2007 into 2011 before it was moved to Disney Junior where it ran from 2011 through 2013. The show has 3 seasons with a total of 113 episodes containing 208 stories. In the show Manny is a handyman who owns a workshop where he works with talking tools. The show was produced by Canadian animation studio Nelvana and the theme song was performed by Los Lobos. In the promo we saw how Disney Channel was marketing the show as the centerpiece of their "Family Night" on the channel. Handy Manny is currently available on Disney Plus.

In the video we also saw a promo for a marathon called Phineas and Ferb: Secret Agent Showdown Marathon. Phineas & Ferb was one of the most popular series on The Disney Channel at the time. Back in 2007 the premiere episode of Phineas & Ferb delivered an unheard of 10.8 million viewers. After that the show regularly delivered viewership in the millions. It was so popular that Disney started airing it on Disney XD too. Phineas & Ferb ran for 4 seasons for a total of 129 episodes with 222 stories. The show also launched 2 made-for-Tv movies; Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension in 2011 and Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe on Disney Plus in 2020. Phineas & Ferb is currently available on Disney Plus. In 2023 Disney Plus ordered 2 additional seasons for their streaming platform.

These promos are all from the year 2010, when Disney Channel was #2 in the overall cable rankings. ESPN was #1 one. And since Disney also owned ESPN we can say that Disney dominated cable in 2010. And we saw that they reached that top status with popular stars like Demi Lovato in Sonny with a Chance, children's shows like Handy Manny produced by Canadian studio Nelvana, acquired content like the film Good Boy from MGM and original content like the series Phineas & Ferb.
