Abbess Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was one of the most noteworthy composers of the medieval period. Her music consists entirely of chant-like melodies set to her own religious poetry. A little of it goes along way. There are two especially noteworthy recordings of her work: The Gothic Voices on Hyperion (featuring Emma Kirkby), and the multi-disc series performed by Sequentia on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.
