Is there such a thing as a math problem worth solving more than once? What would returning to the same problem over time give us? I think there absolutely is, and I have a problem I want to tackle today to demonstrate precisely what renewed attention can reward us with.

I first saw this problem from Fawn Nguyen, the math teacher and coach, though I cannot find her original post about the problem now. You can see a representation of the problem here though: https://tjzager.com/2018/08/29/satisf.... The idea is that we have one of those viral social media style problems with a bunch of pictures of animals, and we want to figure out how to complete the third deck of our "ark" with seals in order to keep everything in balance.

There are, of course, several different ways you can approach the problem. In the video, I want to take three approaches: first of all, looking at it basically the way a clever 10- or 11-year-old would, trying to pair up the animals and figure out what goes with what. Then the way that a 13- or 14-year-old might look at it later on in their algebra class. And finally in the way a student might encounter it in the context of linear algebra.
