🔍 The role of HPV – Around half of throat cancers in the UK are linked to past infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV).

🧬 Why only some develop cancer – Despite over 95% of the population being exposed to HPV, only a small proportion go on to develop throat cancer. This is likely due to a mix of genetic and environmental factors.

💉 HPV vaccination – Available for girls in the UK since 2008 and for boys since 2018, the vaccine is expected to reduce – and eventually eliminate – HPV-related throat cancers.

📉 Long-term impact – With effective vaccination programmes, the burden of treatment for HPV-related cancers will hopefully reduce dramatically over time.
