By putting a jumper across pins 5 and 8 on the Miniscribe 8425 and 8425S, you can force the drive into a factory self test which sequentially reads the beginning track and the next track in series. It will do this in both directions indefinitely until power to the drive is removed or it fails.

This drive is 20MB and uses the 50 pin SCSI interface. It is actuated by a stepper motor and rotates at 3600RPM(?). This drive has a small, red LED activity indicator attached to it. This is because it was removed from a Macintosh SE, and the indicator was used to show error codes for the disk or SCSI controller, as well as (obviously) show drive activity, since shorter seeks tend to be quieter and are often overpowered by the fan. This also means that if it is reading a single track, you can tell it is functional, and also gives a general indication as to whether or not the system is hanging.

This drive is still good and has less than 10 bad sectors. Not bad for a nearly 30 year old drive (produced November 16, 1987)!
