Katarina Witt had a lot of catching up to do, coming back from 9th place after compulsory figures going into the short program at the 1982 World Championships. Note that for the 1981-1982 season, a double flip was the required jump in the combination (as it was in both the 1978 and 1979 seasons). With most of the contenders going conservative or missing their combination (Elaine Zayak), Katarina won the short program, moving her up to 6th place going into the long program.
