The competition in 2021 was between teams from 15 UK universities. Held online on 17 February between teams from University of Aberdeen, University of Cambridge, the Eden Project Learning, Edge Hill University, University of Edinburgh, Imperial College London, University of Liverpool, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Nottingham, The Open University, University of Oxford, University of Reading, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, University of Southampton and University of York. This short video introduces the teams.

The questions were about the UK flora and ecology, terminology, plant identification and diversity, food plants, plants in world cultures – indeed all the interests of the enthusiastic botanist!

This competition was started in 2016 by Dr M (Jonathan Mitchley, University of Reading) and Emeritus Professor John Warren (University of Aberystwyth).

It has been held at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew near London, the University of Reading and at Ness Botanic Gardens of the University of Liverpool. In 2021 it took to the internet with the help of Jonathan Charmley.

The questions were asked by Professors Alistair Fitter (University of York) and Colin Clubbe (Royal Botanic Gardens Kew).

The next contest will be held on 16 and 23 February 2022.
