WASHINGTON (SOA) — Cities across the nation are still struggling with police hiring, adding to concerns about response times and public safety. It's part of a five-year trend that has many wondering if it's the new normal, or if solutions can be found.
Eddie Reynoso will never forget the moment he was shot with a pellet gun outside a San Diego bar.
"I felt something hit my eyeball, and it felt like something exploded," Reynoso said.
There have been no arrests in that 2024 attack, which he said makes his pain even worse.
He's concerned that the police department is short on resources and has struggled to keep officers, which could potentially lower their ability to solve his case.
"Is nothing being done because they're understaffed?" he asked.
Police shortages in San Diego mirror the problems being faced by other major American cities. The number of officers has been declining in many places for years, with some departments citing the George Floyd protests, mental health concerns and challenging recruitment efforts as factors.
The police force in Washington DC is at a 50-year-low, with the police union calling the situation "dangerous."
The department in Baltimore is down 600 officers.
New data out of NYC shows the NYPD headcount continuing to decline, with an 11% drop in officers since 2019.
As for LA, we sat down with then-interim Police Chief Dominic Choi in 2024, who told us the shortage has been a consistent issue, putting their ratio behind other major cities.
He told us that while Chicago has more than 4 cops per every 1,000 people, LA is operating at about 2.1 cops for the same number.
And in Seattle, where by one metric, the department is still 350 officers short, new Police Chief Shon Barnes says there's no panacea, partially because of competition in the job market.
"Seattle has a very strong economy, and people have other options that they have to do," Barnes told us. "But it's about streamlining the process, making sure when people apply. They want a job, they want to work."
