[Cold War - 1948, HUAC Investigations: Whittaker Chambers Testimony, 25Aug48]
Chambers being sworn in, sits down, gives name James David Whittaker Chambers...senior editor of Time Magazine. I was a member of the Communist Party from 1924 until 1937 or 1938.
02:44:45 “I was one time a writer on the Daily Worker...editor of New Masses & functionary in the underground.”
02:45:23 “I did meet Mr Alger Hiss.” Goes on to describe circumstances & knew him till 1938. Says he never met him in Senate office building but did meet him at his apartment. Says Hiss allowed him to live in an apartment in Washington on 28th St. Says he didn’t sell him a 1929 Model A. Says Mr. Hiss obeyed Party discipline at all times.
02:49:08 Describes underground & its separation w/ the American Communist Party. Hiss wanted to give his car to the Oakland Communist Party to be used by a poor organizer.
