2. SOUNDBITE (English) Colonel Ahmed Himmiche, Head of the UN Observer Team:
"First of all let me introduce...now we can say we have the gender balance, we have a female that just joined us today and the team is increasing. Now we have one major coming from Norway and one major coming from Russia. So our team is increasing, so that''s good for us. So we will try to achieve our task within Resolution 2042. Your question about Daraa...I mean we can see that we are moving ahead. Our task lies with the Syrian forces and also with the other parties. As of now, we began our task early. We left our home last Saturday, we already began our task and so we can say that we are moving ahead now, (this) lies with the Syrian authorities and we hope in the future, lies with the other parties. Those are our tasks as of now. That''s the task within Resolution 2042."
(Q: Can you describe the situation in Daraa, how did you find it?)
"We are going to report - we don''t report to the press - we report to our leadership, who will report to the Security Council, but we can say that we have have done our task."
(Q: Do you have a precise date to sign protocols with certain governments?)
"If you read (Resolution) 2042 there is no such mention of protocol. Thank you."

STORYLINE
The head of an advance team of six UN military observers who arrived in Damascus late on Sunday, spoke to reporters on Tuesday and said his team was "moving ahead" with its mission.
The advance team, led by Moroccan Colonel Ahmed Himmiche, has been meeting with Syrian Foreign Ministry officials to discuss ground rules, including what freedom of movement the observers would have, according to UN envoy Kofi Annan''s spokesman.
"We already began our task and so we can say that we are moving ahead now, (this) lies with the Syrian authorities and we hope in the future, lies with the other parties. Those are our tasks as of now," Himmiche said.
Himmiche said the observers'' team had addressed "gender balance" by including a female monitor. He also said two military officers from Russian and Norway would join the team shortly.
However, he would not be drawn into specifics concerning the situation in Daraa.
Amateur video emerged on Tuesday purporting to show province protesters running from what sounds like gunfire at a funeral march in al-Hara, in the southern area of Daraa.
Blood is seen on the ground as protesters appear to carry away an injured person.
