[Free Excel Tutorial] HOW TO SEARCH FOR TEXT STRINGS IN EXCEL - Full HD

If you need to check if a cell contains a substring (specific text), you can do so with the SEARCH function together with the ISNUMBER function. In the generic form of the formula (above),substring is the specific text you are testing for, and text represents text in the cell you are checking.

The SEARCH function returns the position of substring when it's found in text, and the #VALUE! error if not. The ISNUMBER function returns TRUE for numbers and FALSE for anything else. So, if SEARCH finds substring, it returns the position as a number, and ISNUMBER returns TRUE. However, if SEARCH doesn't find substring, it returns a #VALUE! error, causing ISNUMBER to return FALSE.

To illustrate it, I’ll use an example from a chart I include in client dashboards** where they use the AddThis or ShareThis WordPress plugin. The data from these plugins populates to your Google Analytics account. BUT the data is such a red-hot mess, you have to do some cleanup to get it all into nice, neat buckets.

The Mid function requires two arguments—a start point and the n number of characters to return. In the first lesson, the start point for the string we wanted to extract from the middle of the string was constant. In other words, we knew we wanted to “grab” two characters out of the middle of our sample string, and we knew those two characters always started in the fourth position of the string.
