Maleviziotis or Castrinos Pidiktos (pidiktós = leaping, from the Greek verb pidó = to jump,
to leap)
It is one of the circular leaping dances which is performed by both men and women. It was first
danced in the province of Malevizi in the prefecture of Heraklion, whence its name comes. The
name Kastrinos has also prevailed, since in the old days the province was also called Kastro
(Greek word for castle), thanks to the Venetian fortress that looms over the port of Heraklion.
Its pacing is divided into eight steps forward and eight steps back. Due to the intense melody
that accompanies the lively pace, it can be considered one of the pyrrhic (war) dances, in
which men and women participate with their individual improvisations.
