MANPHULA RAM & PARTY - DHERUN

Описание к видео MANPHULA RAM & PARTY - DHERUN

As part of the research for my project with Rajasthan folk musicians, I was lucky enough to visit the village of Binjasar, deep in the Rajasthan desert. The musicians there specialise in an “hour-glass” drum called DHERUN. (Derun). It is a wooden shell with two incredibly thin skins strung across in a way that you can strike the drum and also bend the pitch, a little like a small talking drum. Because of the thickness of the skin, these drums are incredibly fragile.

When they play their patterns in unison it is a hugely moving and powerful sound. I will cherish these experiences forever. It was such an honour to be invited into their world.

The full concert from London can be found elsewhere here on my YouTube channel.
