Your 5 p.m. Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio weather forecast for September 27, 2024:

Hurricane Helene slammed the Florida coast as a powerful Category 4 storm late last night and is now bringing strong winds and incredibly heavy rainfall to Georgia, the southern Appalachian Mountains, the Carolinas and Tennessee.

This storm system will eventually bring us an increase in wind and bands of showers later today all the way through the upcoming weekend!

As mentioned, the wind will become gusty this afternoon. It will be blowing out of the east. As a result, the wind will travel the length of Lake Erie, causing water to pile up in the western basin of the lake. This will bring water level rises along the western shores for the islands out toward Toledo. Waves will also increase with 5-10 footers expected out west -- waves will still be in the 3-6 foot range off the shore of Cleveland, but the western basin of the lake will feel the bulk of the wind impacts.
