The NBA Ain't Ready For Victor Wembanyama and the New San Antonio Spurs

Victor Wembanyama lived up to expectations of the NBA as a rookie. Wemby won the Rookie of the year award and was named to an NBA All-defense first team. The San Antonio Spurs now have a franchise centerpiece that could bring back their dynasty in Wembanyama. This offseason, the Spurs front office have made moves to support Wembanyama and the Spurs young core to their hopeful return to NBA title contention. San Antonio drafted two-way guard Stephon Castle with the 4th pick in the draft, but they also acquired future hall of fame point guard Chris Paul, and they also traded for NBA champion Harrison Barnes. The Spurs traded the pick who would have been Rob Dillingham but they did acquire future picks and pick swaps.

Wembanyama and the Spurs now look promising with the addition of Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes, and Stephon Castle but the rest of their young core are also projected to be good. They still have Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Jonhson, and Tre Jones, who could all be contributors for Coach Popovich. The Spurs were expected to try and trade for Lauri Markkanen but that didn't happen. Wembanyama is already good and is expected to be the face of the NBA in a few years, but can he lead San Antonio to another NBA championship?

The Spurs will now have to make it back to the playoffs first. They have to be able to battle teams like Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the OKC Thunder, and Anthiny Edwards and the Timberwolves to rise above the Western Conference. The Spurs rebuild might be in its early stages but there is a chance they could surprise the entire league next season if Wembanyama and the rest of their young guys take a huge leap, especially with the addition of Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, as well as a potential strong rookie campaign from Stephon Castle.
