“Pathetic” Europe Wakes Up

President Donald Trump’s public dressing-down of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a meeting at the White House has sent shockwaves through Europe, forcing leaders to reconsider long-standing assumptions about U.S. support against Russian aggression.

The public scolding was described by a European lawmaker as “Roosevelt bullying Churchill,” and it came just days after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called European nations “PATHETIC” in a leaked group chat for “free-loading” on defense. Together, the incidents have lit a fire under Europe’s defense planning.

In response, Germany has taken a dramatic step by voting to suspend its constitutional “debt brake,” unlocking an estimated €600 billion (euros) for defense over the next decade. Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz called it a turning point for German and European security.

France is now openly considering extending its nuclear umbrella to other European allies, and Poland has signaled interest in joining that conversation—or even acquiring nuclear weapons itself.

Meanwhile, several eastern European countries have pulled out of international treaties, and military conscription has made a comeback in countries like Denmark and Poland.
Even traditionally neutral countries are reevaluating their positions. Ireland is advancing legislation to allow troop deployments without UN approval, while Portugal is reconsidering its purchase of U.S.-made jets due to concerns over U.S. reliability.

However, deep divisions remain. Southern European countries like Spain and Italy have pushed back on EU defense plans, with Spain’s prime minister arguing that his country faces different threats than those on NATO’s eastern flank.

Still, many observers believe Europe has entered a new phase. “Yes, we have woken up,” said Piotr Buras of the European Council on Foreign Relations. “But now we need to get dressed.”

The message is clear: With Trump’s commitment to NATO in question and his tone toward European allies growing increasingly hostile, the continent is scrambling to stand on its own two feet.
