Union Budget 2026 delivers one of the biggest ever boosts to India’s armed forces and internal security, with defence spending raised to ₹7.85 lakh crore — about 15% higher than last year, roughly 2% of projected GDP, and 14.67% of total central government expenditure, the highest share among all ministries. A large 27.95% slice of this outlay goes to capital expenditure (around ₹2.19 lakh crore), enabling the military to induct new fighter aircraft, helicopters, warships, submarines, artillery, missiles, rockets and unmanned systems, while 20.17% is earmarked for operations and sustenance, 26.40% for pay and allowances, 21.84% for pensions, and 3.64% for civil organisations.
