To calculate an average in Excel, select an empty cell, type =AVERAGE( to start the function, then select the range of numbers you want to average, and finally type ) and press Enter to complete the formula and display the average. You can also use the AutoSum button on the Home tab to quickly insert an average calculation.
Using the AVERAGE Function (Manual Method)

Select an empty cell: where you want the average to appear.

Type the formula: to start the AVERAGE function: =AVERAGE(.
Select the cells: you want to average by clicking and dragging your mouse over them, or by typing the range directly (e.g., A1:A10).
Close the parentheses: ) and press Enter.

Using the AutoSum Button (Quick Method)

Select an empty cell: below or to the right of the numbers you want to average.
Go to the Home tab: on the Excel ribbon.
In the Editing group, click the arrow next to AutoSum.
Select "Average": from the dropdown menu.
Press Enter to get the average.

Example
To find the average of numbers in cells A1 through A5:

In an empty cell, type: =AVERAGE(A1:A5)
Press Enter.
