Today we take a look at the Glasgow Subway which operates in the city of Glasgow in Scotland, UK.

The Glasgow Subway The 3rd Oldest Subway In the World

The Glasgow Subway is one of the most unique systems in Great Britain, it’s one of few systems to run completely underground, it's the only 4ft Narrow gauge railway in Great Britain and its the 3rd oldest Subway in the world.

In 1896 the subway was opened, originally powered by clutch and cable, in 1935 the system was converted to 3rd rail 600 volts DC

By the 1970’s use of the subway declined significantly, this was caused by the closure of the shipyards. Between 1977 -1979 33 new train cars were built by Metro-Cammell.

Many stations have a single centre platform, which is also quite narrow. I found this system really fascinating.

In 2016 a contract was awarded to Stadler Bussnang AG/ Andaldo STS Consortium to build a fleet of 17 new trains and the system will go through another upgrade they hope to have the new trains by 2020
