I'm tuning a Music Maker zither to the suggested key of G major. This is a brand new zither, right out of the box, and shows the typical need to bring a new zither into tune. The shipping really knocks them out of tune.

The most important thing to do is go very slowly! Adjust from the bottom to the top, and don't try to bring each string all the way into tune on your first pass, if it's really out of tune. Tune each string CLOSER to the right pitch, then go to the next string and do the same. Work your way all the way up, then go back to the bottom and repeat the process. You may have to do this three or four times before you can get all the strings to settle into place. If you try to bring it all the way into tune in one try, you'll probably break strings. Additionally, if you make big adjustments to each string, by the time you get to the top string, the pressure will have changed a lot, and will have knocked the lower strings back out of tune.
