《悲愴奏鳴曲》是貝多芬最出色的鋼琴奏鳴曲之一。據說貝多芬在創作完成該作品時，他的父母不幸去世。有人認為該作品是貝多芬前半生的寫照。反映了作曲家內心孤獨但又不向命運低頭執著的性格。但也有人將其與《羅密歐與朱麗葉》相比較。認為這是對青春的詠嘆。實際上，這首奏鳴曲被變奏後常常成為戀愛影視的背景音樂。
