This performance is a combination of raas and garba two types of traditional indian folk dances that originated in the western part of india in the state of Gujarat. Many traditional garbas are performed around a centrally lit lamp or a picture or statue of the goddess Shakti. This type of dancing is extremely popular during the nine day Hindu festival, Navaratri. Raas is performed in pairs. Each dancer holds two sticks which are called dandiya. The women wear traditional dresses such as colorful embroidered choli which are the tops, gaghras which are long full skirts, and bandhani dupattas. The attire is usually very vibrant and colorful. These dances are known to be very upbeat and full of energy.
