The Dell PowerEdge R650 supports five primary types of drives, two types of HDD and three types of SSD. For the HDDs you have SATA and SAS drives, but with SSDs you can get SATA, SAS, and NVMe drives. The speed of your drives depends on the type of drive you choose, HDD SATA drives offer speed options of 7.2K. HDD SAS drives are available with a maximum speed of 7.2K, 10K, or 15K, now if you want the best performance for your hard drive we suggest using SSDs. For a SSD SATA you can get a max speed of 6GB/s. With an SSD SAS you’ll achieve a high speed of 12 GB/s. The Fastest SSD out of all our options is an NVMe Gen 4 with a max speed of 16GB/s. The R650 accommodates a variety of drive sizes, depending on the chassis size, ranging from 2TB to a maximum capacity of 22TB. The Dell PowerEdge R650 provides flexibility in drive choices, and we encourage users to share their experiences and findings with different drive capacities in the comments below.

The max size drives for your R650 server will depend on what type of chassis you have. Some are going to be a Large Form Factor 3.5” slot (LFF) or a Small Form Factor 2.5” Slot (SFF). For NVMe, you can only use it with an 8 bay or 10 bay SFF. If your R650 server has 2.5” Small Form Factor chassis, a SATA HDD can get up to 2TB and a SAS HDD can hold a max of 2.4TB. The real benefit to the Small Form Factor is the SSD since there really is not a lot of scalabilities with the HDDs. Now with a SATA SSD you can max out at 3.84TB, a SAS SSD will get you 15.36TB, and an NVMe can have a max storage of 7.68TB. A lot of people who are looking to get a nice and relatively cheap solution for storage, use larger hard drives. With a 3.5” Large Form Factor chassis you can get 18TB with a SATA HDD and a SAS HDD. However, we were able to test some bigger sizes and were able to max out with 20TB on a SATA HDD and 22TB on a SAS HDD.

Additionally, the R650 comes with hot-swap capabilities for convenient drive installation without the need for server downtime. Whether you opt for SAS, SATA, or NVMe drives, the hot-swap feature allows you to add or replace drives while the server is operational. In our upcoming tutorials, we'll guide you through the process of installing new drives into your R650 and provide insights into testing drive performance using tools like Dell Diagnostics and HD Sentinel. These tools are not only useful for drive assessments but also for monitoring Health Scores and Power on Hours, ensuring your drives operate optimally. Share your experiences and stay tuned for more informative content on maximizing your Dell PowerEdge R650's storage capabilities.
