India’s defence budgeting is undergoing a structural shift. Once dominated by emergency purchases and short-term fixes, it is now focused on long-term force-building. With a ₹6.8 lakh crore defence budget, ₹1.72 lakh crore capital outlay, and over 75% earmarked for domestic procurement, this is no longer survival spending, it’s strategic investment. But a critical gap remains: R&D. India spends just 5.5–6% of its defence budget on research, far below the US and China. In future wars, software, sensors, and decision speed will matter more than platforms alone. Indigenisation isn’t symbolism, it's wartime freedom. With defence exports crossing ₹21,000 crore, India is gaining influence. The risk is complacency: without sustained R&D and reform, today’s strength could become tomorrow’s vulnerability.
