The turtle stopped struggling, conserving what little energy it had left. The fisherman climbed down, cut through the line piece by piece, and held the shell steady until the turtle could breathe freely again. After a long pause, it kicked once, then disappeared into deeper water. Minutes later, the surface rippled again. The turtle resurfaced, circled the dock slowly, then slipped away for good.
