CHAPTER 8: SPRINGS PART 2

1. A three extension coil springs are hooked in series that supports a single weight of 100 kgs. The first spring is rated at 0.4 kg/mm and the other 2 lower is rated at 0.64 kg/mm. Compute for total deflection.
2. Compute the deflection of a 18 coils helical spring having a load of 100 kgs. The modulus of rigidity is 96.62 GPa, OD = 9.256 cm with a wire diameter of 9.525 mm. The spring is squared and ground ends.
3. All four compression coil springs support a load of 400 kgs. The springs are arranged in parallel and have a uniform rate of 0.709 kg/mm. Compute the deflection in mm.
4. A spring sustains 200 ft – lbs of energy with a deflection of 3”. Assume that the mean coil diameter is 7 times the wire diameter and that the allowable stress is 100 ksi. Determine the wire diameter.
5. A spring with squared and ground ends has a pitch of 20 mm and a wire diameter of 12.5 mm. If there are 12 actual number of coils, determine the deflection of the spring at solid height.
6. A weight of 100 lbs strikes a coil spring from a height of 18” and deflects the spring by 6”. Find the maximum force applied to the spring.
