Buddha's relic stupa is Bhagwatpur Teai.
Bhagwatpur Teai/ Old Teai: In page 67 third para Huen Tsang writes, “To the south east of this last spot is a stupa; This was built by a king of Vaishali. After the nirvana of the Buddha, a former king of the country, obtained a portion of the relics of his body, and to honour them as highly as possible raised this (building).
The records of India state: In this stupa there was at first a quatity of relics of his body equal to a “hoh” (ten pecks) Ashoka Raja opening it, took away none tenths of the whole leaving only one tenth behind. Afterwards there was a king of the country who wished to open the stupa, but at the moment when he began to do so, the earth trembled, and he dared not proceed to open (the stupa).”
The reader will realize this is no doubt Bhagwatpur Teai or old Teai. It is about 8oo meters to the south east of Navada just as Huen Tsang states. The village is settled on a huge mud stupa which is perfectly circular in shape. Infact, I think I recognized two stupas. The older (original) one is smaller in size and has an ancient well on it. This is most probably the original stupa built by the Lichavi king. Later King Ashoka took out the relics and built a second stupa which is huge in size and has an entire village settled on it. In satellite pictures you can see the perfectly circular shape of the village. The name Bhagwat itself may be an ancient rendering of the word Bhagwan or God. In this area the Buddha was known as Bhagwat. In the Amrapali sutta the Buddha is mentioned several times as Bhagwat. Teai too could be an ancient form of the rural Bihari word Tiag. Tiag means sacrifice. We all know that the Buddha sacrificed himself and died. In the Amrapali sutta the Buddha is referred to as ‘Bhagwat’ which means demi God. So Bhagwatpur Teai or old Teai, and its enormous size, is certainly the Lichavi Buddha relic stupa.
