The Roots of a Massive Ancient Tree That Washed Up On A Beach

Out for a little Beachwalk and stumbled across this incredible stump, which gives us a really cool firsthand look at the root structure of these ancient trees!

First off, we can see how the lower part of the trunk forms a flying buttress shape, indicating that this tree began its life germinating on a fallen nurse log! It’s initial roots would have wrapped down the side of that log to find their way to the soil, and from there the roots would have spread outwards, which we can still see here. Then, we can see how the roots spread out far and wide, but not very deep, and this is attributed not only to relatively shallow soils resting on bedrock in this part of the world, but because those roots are able to find more nutrients spreading out far while also creating a more stable base for the tree to grow on that is resistant to strong winds. Looking at the roots, we can see how they all criss cross one another and even fuse together through inosculation in order to create easier nutrient transfer and a stronger base - pretty dang neat to see!
